According to the Austin Board of Realtor’s Year End 2018 report, the median price for single-family homes increased annually by 3.6%, reaching $310,400 in the Austin/Round Rock area. Kevin P. Scanlan, 2019 Austin Board of REALTORS® president, said this past year “was the highest-grossing year on record. For the first time, the median price for single-family homes in the Austin-Round Rock MSA (metropolitan statistical area) stayed above $300,000 for ten consecutive months.”
Protesting your appraised value every year can help hold down your property tax bill. The deadline to file a property tax protest is 30 days after your Notice of Appraised Value is made available to you, or May 15th, whichever is later. Counties begin mailing Notice of Appraised Value to residents in early April.

You can protest your appraised value directly with the county or engage a firm to do this on your behalf. The firm collects a percentage of any tax savings that results from the protest. Your Austin Asset advisor can provide a list of local firms which provide this service.
